Sweden maintains a sophisticated, powerful military force. Government spending is concentrated on defense, reflecting Sweden's need to protect its neutrality. Most weaponry, including Saab fighter jets and Bofor anti-aircraft guns, is supplied by its advanced home defense industry. Regular anti-submarine patrols are maintained in the Baltic and North Seas.
With the end of the Cold War, strategic priorities have changed. Sweden feels less bound to its neutral stance and is considering future membership in the Western European Union and even NATO. Mutual security cooperation agreements are also being discussed with the Baltic States.
